Private Collins served with 14 DLI during the Great War. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty" during the battle of Arras, 21-23 April 1917. "Although he was wounded he refused to leave his post, taking part in a bombing raid, and during the night assisted to repel two counter attacks. He was wounded a second and third time during the following two days, throughout which he continued to throw bombs with great skill".
